Head of Sustainability
The Asta Interview with Talbir Bains

Phil Pearce brings a unique mix of international experience, risk management, and a deep commitment to sustainability to his role at Asta. His career has taken him from auditing public sector projects in Kenya to supporting the development of sustainability practices within the insurance industry. In this interview, Phil shares insights into his journey, the role of sustainability in insurance and opens up about balancing work with family and his passion for cooking and music. His story highlights how personal interests, professional adaptability, and a strong ethical drive can make a meaningful impact in today’s business world.

Q. Could you tell us a bit about your career journey?

PP. My career started off in accountancy, which wasn’t exactly planned. I had intended to move into social and economic policy, but was drawn in by the stability it offered through training, and I began by working with public sector clients. Then I had a chance to work on international aid projects, auditing how funds were being used for development programs. That took me to places like Kenya and Sarajevo, which broadened my perspective on social and economic issues.

From there, I went to New York and worked in financial services risk advisory, helping firms get ready for IPOs. I enjoyed the fast pace, but eventually, I found my way back to London and into the insurance market. I joined Asta in 2020, right around the time the world went into lockdown.

Q. What attracted you to Asta, and what do you find most rewarding about working here?

PP. I was drawn to Asta because it operates as a third-party managing agent, which means it sits in this unique space between a traditional insurer and a service provider, and that was appealing to me.

Asta also felt like a good fit because it offered the flexibility and support I was looking for. I’d reached a point where I wanted more control over my career and a chance to explore areas I was passionate about, like sustainability. One of the standout factors was Asta’s approach to flexibility – I work part-time, four days a week, which gives me the balance to pursue other interests and spend time with my family. That kind of openness is rare in the industry and was a big draw for me.

Asta’s model really stands out because we’re able to help a variety of clients set up, manage and develop their businesses in a way that meets both regulatory and market needs. It allows us to be strategic and proactive, rather than reactive, which is refreshing.

What I love most, though, is the genuine commitment to doing the right thing. Asta’s supportive culture is real – I got involved with the Culture Committee early on, where we worked on a range of ESG initiatives. Asta has even supported me in pursuing a part-time doctorate in sustainability, for which I’m grateful. It’s great to be part of a company that values personal and professional growth and is willing to invest in its people.

Q. You’ve got a strong background in risk management. What motivated you to shift toward sustainability, and how does your risk experience influence your approach?

PP. Sustainability has been a long-standing interest of mine. I studied geography at university, which gave me an early foundation in environmental and social issues, and then my work in international aid brought those issues to life. When I started working in the insurance sector, my curiosity naturally led me toward CSR and ESG topics, which came to fruition when I studied corporate social responsibility in the London insurance market as part of my MBA dissertation. That set me up to support the development of ESG frameworks, which was my first foray into sustainability.

Risk management plays a big role in how I approach sustainability. In risk, you’re constantly working with stakeholders, understanding their challenges, and weighing various factors to help them reach their goals. Sustainability is similar – it’s complex, it involves a lot of different voices, and there’s no single solution. My risk background helps me see sustainability as an extension of what insurance already does. For instance, we deploy the same risk management tools and frameworks to measure and manage the impact from climate change. It’s not an isolated effort. It’s a way of making sustainability part of our everyday business practices, not just a box we tick for compliance.

Q. How does bringing sustainability into risk management change the way insurers handle risk?

PP. Integrating sustainability into risk management is transformative for insurers. Risk management is the backbone of the industry, so by embedding sustainability, we can factor in new, complex risks, like climate change, right into our risk assessments and decision-making. This isn’t just about meeting regulatory requirements; it’s about anticipating risks and setting ourselves up for long-term success.

For instance, regulatory bodies like the PRA and the MAS in Singapore have frameworks focused on climate and environmental financial risks, which require insurers to think more strategically about their exposure and impacts. At Asta, we use risk management tools – things like stress testing, scenario analysis, and horizon scanning – to explore how sustainability factors might impact our business and that of our clients. The goal is to make sustainability part of “business as usual,” not just an add-on.

Q. In your view, what role can insurance play in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

PP. The insurance industry has a big role to play in advancing the SDGs. The goals cover everything from climate action to gender equality, and each one represents an area where insurers can make a meaningful impact. Insurance provides a financial safety net that helps individuals and businesses take risks without compromising their future. For SDGs to succeed, especially in emerging markets, we need that kind of stability.

One of the biggest challenges is what’s called the “protection gap,” especially in developing countries, although it’s very much apparent in developed economies too. High premiums covering high risk exposure will inevitably make insurance unaffordable where it’s needed most. To meet SDGs, there is a high risk at current levels of immaturity, and so we need to find a way for insurers to reduce that risk.

Whilst that’s the case, we are seeing insurers start to support the SDGs with innovative, such as those designed to support ecosystem protection, like mangrove reforestation, and others focused on social issues, like cyber coverage for non-profits. The challenge now is for insurers to look critically at their portfolios and ask if they’re truly aligning with the SDGs. This includes reconsidering coverage for companies whose activities might directly oppose sustainability goals, like fossil fuels.

Q. Could you share an example of a sustainability initiative at Asta that you’re especially proud of?

PP. One initiative I’m really proud of is the annual sustainability forum we’ve introduced at Asta. This is a space where we bring our clients together to talk openly about their sustainability challenges, ambitions, and share best practices. We launched it in 2023, and it's been a great success; we hosted our second one in November last year. These forums allow us to work collaboratively with our clients and think strategically about sustainability.

Another development I’m excited about is what we’re calling “underwriting portfolio playbacks.” This is about looking at our underwriting decisions through a sustainability lens and using data to provide insights into their social and environmental impact. It’s a way of helping both Asta and our clients make more informed, sustainable choices. We’re also continuing previous work in climate litigation – an area of increasing significance to casualty insurers – to better understand how it could impact us and our clients. It’s all about being proactive and equipping ourselves for the future.

Q. What advice would you give to professionals in the insurance industry who want to move into sustainability?

PP. I transitioned into sustainability after 17 years in risk management and assurance, and it’s been incredibly rewarding. If it’s something you’re passionate about, don’t let the length of time you’ve spent in another role hold you back – your experience will bring valuable perspective to the field.

Start by asking questions and looking for opportunities to get involved. Sustainability is a broad and complex area, so the more you learn, the better equipped you’ll be. If your company has any sustainability initiatives, try to get involved. If not, consider starting something yourself. Often, companies haven’t yet explored sustainability in-depth, and your initiative might be just what’s needed to kick things off.

Also, take time to educate yourself. There are plenty of courses, certifications, and resources out there to build your knowledge. And don’t underestimate the support your employer might offer. If you can make a strong business case, they may even fund training or development. For example, Asta supported my part-time doctorate in sustainability because it aligned with their strategic goals.

Sustainability is a fast-evolving field, and the opportunities are growing. If you’re curious and proactive, you’ll find a way to transition into it, no matter where you’re starting from.

Q. What are your future aspirations, both within Asta and in the broader context of your career?

PP. In the short term, my focus is on taking Asta’s sustainability function to the next level. We’ve spent time building a solid foundation, and now it’s about putting that into practice. Over the next year, I’m excited to dive into the practical side, especially around how sustainability impacts underwriting decisions. We’ll be looking at different scenarios – what happens if Net Zero targets are met or missed – and exploring the potential impacts on us and our clients. It’s about making sustainability part of the decision-making process at every level.

Looking further ahead, I think the insurance industry’s focus will continue to evolve. Right now, the emphasis is heavily on climate risks, but I see nature-related financial risk and social factors becoming equally significant over the next 5-10 years, primarily due to the increasing role of sustainability disclosures. Sustainability isn’t just about hitting environmental targets – it’s about creating a resilient, equitable future for businesses and communities alike.

For me, success would mean being in a position to positively influence that trajectory. Whether it’s helping clients adapt to new challenges, guiding colleagues to think differently about sustainability, or shaping the industry’s broader approach, I want to contribute to meaningful change. Even if we can play a small role, it’s a role all the same.

Beyond all that, my doctorate will keep me busy for the next five years!

Q. Outside of work, what are your hobbies or interests, and how do they contribute to your overall well-being?

PP. I’ve got two young boys, so they keep me busy and on my toes! Working part-time gives me a day each week with them, which I really value. Beyond family time, cooking is a big passion of mine. I used to work as a chef, so I love experimenting in the kitchen. Lately, I’ve been perfecting Korean-style gochujang pork belly – it’s dangerously good.

Music is another interest. I dabbled as a radio DJ during my university days, and I still enjoy discovering new artists and going to gigs. I’ve got tickets to see Confidence Man and Incubus soon, and I’m really looking forward to those.

I also try to stay active to keep both body and mind sharp. Last summer, some colleagues and I completed a relay for the London triathlon, which was a great personal challenge. Having these outlets helps me stay balanced and brings fresh energy to my work at Asta.
