Sam Wallace
Head of Capital

The Asta Interview with Talbir Bains

After more than eight years in Asta’s actuarial team, Sam Wallace has been appointed Head of Capital – leading one of the most analytical and collaborative teams in the Lloyd’s market. From capital modelling and regulatory submissions to mentoring and process innovation, Sam’s role bridges technical expertise with strategic insight. He talks to us about his journey so far, what makes Asta’s approach unique, and how he sees the capital landscape evolving.

Q. You’ve recently been appointed Head of Capital at Asta after eight years in the actuarial team. How does it feel to step into this new role?

SW: It’s still sinking in a little bit, to be honest. When you’ve grown up within a business, it’s both exciting and slightly surreal to suddenly be leading one of its core teams.

I’ve been part of Asta’s actuarial function for a long time, so I’ve had the privilege of watching it develop and expand as the company has grown. Taking on this role feels like a natural next step, but it’s also a great responsibility – to maintain the high standards that have got us here and to build on the work of some brilliant people.

What’s most rewarding is that I still get to be close to the technical side of the work – that’s what I love – but now I also have the chance to shape the bigger picture: how we operate, how we develop people, and how we keep delivering value for our syndicates.

Q. Tell us a little about your career journey – what led you into the actuarial world and ultimately to Asta?

SW: My route in wasn’t the most direct. I studied maths at UCL and then did a postgraduate degree in astrophysics – which, if I’m honest, was just a way of delaying having to decide what to do with my life!

Eventually I realised that I wanted a career where I could apply analytical thinking to real-world problems. The actuarial world felt like a natural fit: it’s essentially about understanding uncertainty and helping businesses make informed decisions in the face of it.

I joined UMACS, which was a third-party actuarial consultancy. When Asta brought that team in-house in 2018, I effectively became part of the Asta family overnight. Since then, I’ve been lucky to work across capital, reserving and pricing – but capital was always what fascinated me most. It’s great to see the direct connection between analysis and strategic decision-making.

Q. What first attracted you to Asta – and what’s kept you here for more than eight years?

SW: It’s absolutely the people. From day one, I’ve been surrounded by colleagues who are approachable, generous with their time, and genuinely committed to sharing knowledge. There’s a real culture of collaboration – people want to help you understand, not just tell you what to do.

You also get incredible exposure early on. Because Asta supports such a wide range of syndicates – from new start-ups to established market leaders – you learn about different business models, risk appetites and capital structures. No two clients are the same, so you’re constantly challenged to think differently.

That mix of opportunity, trust and support is why I’ve stayed. I’ve grown up here professionally, and I’ve never stopped learning.

Q. For those outside the market, what does the Capital function at Asta actually involve — and why is it so important?

SW: At its simplest, our job is to make sure every syndicate we support holds the right amount of capital for the risks it writes. But in practice, it’s about much more than just meeting regulatory requirements.

Capital management sits right at the intersection of risk, underwriting and strategy. The capital model is the engine that helps a syndicate understand how its portfolio behaves under stress, how diversification works, and what the impact of its decisions will be on solvency and returns.

Our team helps clients interpret that model – not just build it – so they can make informed, forward-looking choices. The ultimate goal is to give syndicates confidence that their capital position truly reflects the risks they’re running and the ambitions they have.

Q. How does your actuarial background prepare you for this new leadership role?

SW: The technical grounding is essential. To lead a capital team, you have to understand every calculation and assumption – because you’ll inevitably need to defend or explain them to regulators, boards and underwriters.

But over time, what really matters is communication. Translating technical outputs into something that’s meaningful to non-actuaries is a skill in itself. You have to tell the story behind the numbers – what they mean for the business and why they matter.

As I’ve progressed, the leadership element has become just as rewarding. Seeing people develop, mentoring them through challenges, and helping them grow their own confidence – that’s a big part of the job now, and one I really enjoy.

Q. What are your main priorities as Head of Capital over the next year?

SW: The first priority is continuity. Asta’s capital function has a fantastic reputation, so maintaining that standard of quality and consistency is key.

Beyond that, my focus is on efficiency and evolution – looking for ways to streamline processes, automate where possible, and free up time for more value-adding work.

We’re also putting a lot of emphasis on training and development. The capital space is constantly changing, and we need to make sure our people have the tools and knowledge to keep up. I want everyone in the team to feel they’re building a career here, not just doing a job.

Q. Asta supports a wide range of syndicates, from start-ups to established players. What are the challenges – and opportunities – in managing such diversity?

SW: That variety is what keeps the work interesting. Every syndicate has to answer the same fundamental regulatory questions, but how those questions play out depends entirely on their size, structure and business mix.

For start-ups, it’s often about building something from scratch – setting up frameworks, educating boards, getting comfortable with uncertainty. For more established syndicates, it’s about optimisation and refinement.

The challenge is constantly switching between those contexts, but the upside is huge: you get to see how different approaches work in practice, and that cross-pollination of ideas makes us better advisers.

Q. How does the Capital team collaborate with other functions at Asta?

SW: Communication is a real strength at Asta. There are no silos – if you need to speak to someone, you just do. That’s vital for capital modelling, because our work depends on inputs from everywhere: exposure management, underwriting, risk, finance, the list goes on.

The relationships between those teams are genuinely collaborative. We’re all working towards the same goal – ensuring that every syndicate we support has a plan, capital and operating model that are robust and practical. It’s very much a team sport.

Q. How do you see capital requirements and regulation evolving at Lloyd’s?

SW: Lloyd’s is continuing to refine how it assesses capital – trying to make the process more proportionate to the scale and complexity of each syndicate. That’s a positive direction. The focus is shifting towards insight and usability rather than just compliance.

At the same time, the world isn’t getting any simpler. We’re facing new forms of risk – from climate to geopolitical uncertainty to emerging technologies – and those have to be captured in the capital framework.

Our job is to help clients stay ahead of that change, so they’re not just meeting today’s requirements but preparing for tomorrow’s.

Q. Technology is changing every part of the market. How do you see automation or AI influencing capital management?

SW: Automation already plays a huge role. With so many clients, efficiency is critical, so we’re constantly improving how we collect, validate and process data. The more we can automate those repeatable tasks, the more time we have to focus on analysis and interpretation.

AI is an exciting tool, but it has to be used thoughtfully. It’s not about replacing actuaries – it’s about freeing them to do the work that really adds value. The key will be transparency and control: we have to understand how the technology is working and make sure it’s delivering meaningful insight, not just noise.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your role – and what’s been your proudest moment so far at Asta?

SW: The best moments are when you can see the impact of your work – whether that’s helping a syndicate get through the approval process, supporting a client through a challenging review, or helping a colleague solve a difficult problem.

I’m particularly proud of the people I’ve worked with and mentored over the years. Seeing them grow, qualify, and take on more responsibility is hugely satisfying.

Asta has been my professional home from day one, so every step – from trainee to actuary to Head of Capital – feels like part of one long journey. That’s something I’m really proud of.

Q. Finally, what advice would you give to someone starting out in actuarial or capital management today?

SW: Be curious. The technical side can always be learned, but curiosity is what makes a great actuary – wanting to understand not just what the numbers say, but why.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and don’t be intimidated by how complex things can seem at first. The best way to learn is by doing, and at Asta you’ll be surrounded by people who genuinely want to help you succeed.

Capital is a fascinating field, where risk, data and decision-making meet – if that excites you, you’ll never get bored. This is particularly true at Asta, where no two days are the same and there’s variety, challenge and the opportunity to shape your own path.
